IN AUSTIN

not your average puppy trainers

Puppy training may not be as high stakes as other programs like aggression training, but that doesn’t mean that getting it right isn’t as critical.

Our trainers have studied puppy development in depth, far beyond the average dog trainer’s education. Our Austin puppy trainers include Ashley, a Dog Behaviorist, holding a Master’s Degree in Animal Psychology and Neuroscience, and Mara, an exotic animal trainer, competitive handler, and new puppy specialist.

Instead of passing along a one-size-fits-all set of information, our trainers hold the expertise to customize the approach for each puppy. This is especially important for crate training and socialization.

Many puppy owners don’t realize that “socialization” does not mean taking your puppy to meet new people and other dogs. Often, the best socialization includes avoiding too much time with others! This is why we do not offer group or play classes, which frequently provide negative socialization experiences for dogs and puppies. Correct socialization looks different for every puppy. That’s why we come to your home, evaluate your dog’s personality, and give you specific instructions to suit them perfectly.

Our Puppy Training Goals

Tailored Puppy Training Programs in Austin

At Traction, we are your choice for puppy training in Austin. Our puppy training courses build the foundation for a lifetime of good behavior and companionship. We know that the early months of a puppy’s life are crucial for development, which is why our Austin trainers focus on essential skills like socialization, basic obedience, and positive habit formation. Utilizing gentle and effective training methods, we help your puppy learn the basics of being a well-mannered member of the family. Our trainers are experts at addressing common puppy challenges such as potty training, chewing, and early recall, ensuring your furry friend grows up to be a confident and sociable adult dog.

our puppy training timeline

Puppy training begins immediately when you bring your new puppy home. We begin with a single in-home training session walking you through detailed crate training, potty training, and socialization instructions. New puppies are in a developmental period that is officially named the “Critical Socialization Period”. This developmental period occurs from about 6 to 16 weeks of age. It is the only time in a dog’s lifetime when we have lasting influence over their genetic predisposition with people, dogs, and environmentals. Thus, it is worth focusing solely on a select set of puppy behavior exercises during this time.

Then, once your puppy nears the end of the Critical Socialization Period at 14-16 weeks of age, we begin basic obedience training.
