about our
Canine Good Citizen training program
The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) is a program created by the American Kennel Club (AKC).
According to the AKC:
CGC is a ten-skill training program that’s open to all dogs–purebred and mixed breed–that focuses on teaching the basics of good manners and obedience, instilling the values of responsible ownership, and strengthening the bond between you and your dog at home and out in the community.
Traction Dog Training Club’s CGC training program follows the AKC guidelines exactly.
cgc training is based on the following 10 tests:
- 1. Accepting a friendly stranger
- 2. Sitting politely for petting
- 3. Appearance and grooming
- 4. Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead)
- 5. Walking through a crowd
- 6. Sit and Down on command and staying in place
- 7. Coming when called
- 8. Reaction to another dog
- 9. Reaction to distraction
- 10. Supervised separation
The CGC test is very similar to the test required to certify your dog as a therapy dog, so we will encourage you to get both certifications at once!
Our trainers are certified AKC CGC Evaluators, so you will not need to find a third party to get tested.
prepare for the cgc test
At Traction Dog Training Club, our Canine Good Citizen (CGC) training program is designed to help your dog succeed in achieving this prestigious certification.
We begin with a marker training system, which allows us to clearly communicate with your dog and reinforce the correct behaviors. From there, we teach the required CGC commands, gradually increasing distractions to ensure your dog remains focused in various environments. CGC training is very similar to our basic obedience training program.
Our training methods include a mix of positive reinforcement, real-world scenarios, and other behavior shaping methods, all aimed at creating a reliable and well-mannered dog. Read in depth about our training methods and philosophy here.
Canine Good Citizen training must prepare you for the real test. As the CGC test requires you to use only a basic collar and leash—without any rewards or verbal corrections—we focus on fading out any additional equipment and rewards before the test to ensure your dog responds confidently to your cues. With our approach, your dog will be well-prepared to pass the CGC test and demonstrate calm, controlled behavior in everyday situations.
